Warriors Mark Village was founded in 1768. According to legend the name Warriors Mark was derived from Indian Warriors of the Iroquois Federation ceremoniously marking trees in the forest.

Very clever design! I wonder if your concern about it's appearance has to do as much with the locale as the form. Perhaps it would be less jarring in a modern setting (e.g. barren white)?
As to the base, I think the same feature that makes it so strong and functional is the one that affects its visual appeal: the weight of the joints. They are rather massive.
