Very clever design! I wonder if your concern about it's appearance has to do as much with the locale as the form. Perhaps it would be less jarring in a modern setting (e.g. barren white)?
As to the base, I think the same feature that makes it so strong and functional is the one that affects its visual appeal: the weight of the joints. They are rather massive.
